Finally, Steam will be available for Linux! However, there is a catch – Ubuntu will initially be the only supported distribution. Valve’s goal is to get the Steam client as well as Left 4 Dead 2 up and running on Precise Pangolin, but there are no real specifics in regards to other Linux distros. According to Valve’s Linux blog, Ubuntu’s popularity made it the best candidate for testing the client. Unfortunately, that does leave non-Ubuntu users out in the cold – for now.
Overall, this is promising in terms of major game support for Linux. No doubt this will introduce a whole set of issues and spark countless debates, but it does seem to be a step in the right direction. Do you see this as a victory for Linux gaming, or are you yet to be convinced?
